Bridge (2001)
Bridge is the final part of a series of 4 books: Birds From Byzantium, The Elder Paints An Icon, Bridge and The 12. The setting for these books is the monastery of Agios Giorgios at Mavrovouni, in Cyprus, which is situated a stone’s throw away from the Green Line which separates the Greek from the Turkish inhabitants of the island.
Bridge pays respect to the publisher Teriade and the book he commissioned from Picasso and Reverdy: Le Chants de Morts. The text is bilingual, and I believe unique because the Greek and the English run on from each other… in other words, we do not separate them. The images are lithographs and the text is handwritten and printed as a silk screen – together they explore notions of a homeland, the journeying of the spirit as well as looking back to our parents’ lives and therefore on our own past. My collaboration with George Matoulas has resulted in two other books: Journey (1999) and His Wayward Hand (2005).
